Volunteer to find new venues and run bookstalls in your local community.

This would be perfect for anyone who loves books and possibly has considered becoming a volunteer at a bookshop or bookstore, but there isn't one nearby.

If you'd like to increase access to free books and raise money for charity, it could be ideal for you.

Compared to being a bookshop volunteer this is also more personal. The bookstall may be located at a local venue, but it will feel like "your bookstall" if you are looking after it.

Find venues

The first role of a volunteer is to simply ask local cafes, coffee shops, community spaces and retail outlets if they would like to start a Free or Donate bookstall.

If you find a perfect venue, ask if you can speak to the manager.

Explain the benefits of hosting a bookstall and how it can increase community engagement. Offering free books is a great way for them to attract customers.

Run a bookstall

Most small bookstalls are run by the venue itself, as they are extremely easy to look after, but they will always welcome additional support from a volunteer if it's offered.

If a larger venue like a supermarket or major retailer starts a bookstall, they will need to know it's going to be looked after by someone on a regular basis.

This is where a volunteer is always needed.

You would normally call in for a few minutes each day, to tidy up the shelves and take away any books that are unsuitable. Sometimes you will need to add extra books.

Run a bookstall

Increasing access to free books

In addition to running a bookstall you may wish to supply places like foodbanks and homeless shelters with free books.

Most bookstalls get a large amount of book donations, so you can often find yourself with a surplus, and it's great to get books where they are really needed.

This is especially important for children.

I supply my local foodbank with books all year round, and I make a point of saving all the Christmas themed ones for a special delivery in December.
